A Brainstorm session and lunch were exclusively organized for Platform partners of the innovation Platform Shore Support at TNO in Soesterberg, preliminary to the seminar ‘Results & Lease’. The Platform partners were well represented to discuss on four up to date issues, namely The Marof, CBM Training, Shore Support 2.0 and Shipping in 2025.
On March 16, shipyard Bijlsma in Lemmer delivered yard number 75, the MV Ennio Marnix , to Gerard de Jonge in the outer harbour of Harlingen. Gerard is also captain-owner of the MV Alana Evita, one of the participating vessels during the Shore Support research.
Flinter Challenge supports Alpe d’HuZes, a cycling event in which individuals or teams try to conquer the famous French mountain Alpe d’Huez. A Flinter team of 8 cyclers will join more than 4500 competitors on June 9th. Last year this event raised more than EUR 12 million to fight cancer.
On Saturday January 29 MV Flinter Atlantic was christened by Mrs. Hanny Pieperiet and launched successfully under the watchful eye of a crowd of more than 500. The weather conditions were near perfect: blue skies, light winds and a temperature around zero.

Wagenborg’s magazine Details published an article on the newly build MV Jade in the last December edition. The article tells the story of the MV Jade, its captain owner Fabian de Jonge and his choice for a smaller scaled vessel and shorter voyages of three to four days.
As from the 18th of December, PJ Brand has moved into her new premises. PJ Brand is one of the Shore Support partners and now located in Spijkenisse.
Captain owner Harald Busser (38), one of the enthusiastic participants within the Shore Support project, and his stepson Up (15), tragically passed away on October 29 2010 during the floods in Thailand, leaving behind his wife Phibe and sun Robbie.
Seacontractors, one of the Shore Support participants, announced that they have expanded their activities in Germany.
Shipowner CV Van Donderen has launched a new website. With the M.V.Adamas, they participate in the project Shore Support as one of the vessels studied. CV Van Donderen is a young company based in Delfzijl with a modern fleet of three ships, ’Adamas’ (Super Saimax 2010), ’Diamonds’ (Super Saimax 2005) and ’Ruby’ (Ice-Runner 2008). With these three ships, ’General Cargo’ is transported within European waters.
SAM Electronics, one of the Shore Support partners, has secured new orders to outfit 50 vessels under construction at yards in China, Germany, Italy, Korea, Netherlands and the Philippines with its new range of NACOS Platinum integrated navigation and automation control systems.
From July 1, 2010, the Netherlands Shipping Inspectorate (IVW) will not issue any engine room statements (machinekamerverklaringen) anymore. This statement is not required by law. That the statement is no longer issued, has no effect on the crew composition.
On July 15th, VEKA/Bijlsma BV delivered her yardnumber 763 to C.V. Scheepvaartonderneming Jade (Fabian de Jonge, Amsterdam). The MV Jade sails according to the equivalent arrangements of the project Shore Support.
Recently Machinefabriek Bolier started to use her training center. Late last year Bolier began to set up this facility, resulting in a room where a test stand has been made with MaK engines, connected to various components and systems including among others the Start and Stop system, governor, safety system and speed control box.
The Royal Association of Netherlands Shipowners (KVNR) recently published their 2009 Annual Report with the title The shipping industry in the Netherlands: worth the investment. The project Shore Support is also mentioned in the report.
The Shore Support seminar Design & Usability was held on June the first. The interactive program spurred up discussion. Six maritime specialists spoke out their opinion about the theme Design & Usability in just 10 minutes. The speakers were interspersed with statements about the subject, that split the 70 visitors of the seminar by their point of view, into a red and green camp. The seminar took place in the hold of a newly built ship at Damen Shipyards Bergum, location Harlingen.
Today, more than 45 different organizations have registered for the seminar ‘Design & Usability’ on Tuesday June 1 in Harlingen. This seminar will be held as part of the innovation platform Shore Support.
TNO Defence, Security and Safety has announced that the collection of data on board the 25 Shore Support vessels will be finalized at the end of September. Thereafter the scientific research will reach her final phase of data analysis and reporting of the collected data.
The Wagenborg magazine Details published an article on the new build MV Zeeland in the last March edition. The article tells the story of the MV Zeeland, its captain owner Mark Verkooijen and the successful trial trip, christening and celebration in January.
The Dutch Yearbook for Inland Shipping 2009 (Jaarboek Binnenvaart 2009) contains an article on the innovation project Shore Support. This yearbook is an annual special edition from the Schuttevaer and published by Uitgeverij De Alk.
A German trade mission from the 2nd to the 4th of March to German shipping companies gave many new insights. The structure with a combination of a seminar/workshop and a mini-exhibition is an excellent way to speak to many shipping companies in a short period of time. Also the innovative platforms Shore Support and Broadband@Sea were represented at this event.
The magazine De Blauwe Wimpel has published an article on the innovation project Shore Support. De Blauwe Wimpel is a Dutch maritime magazine for the shipping and shipbuilding industry. It contains articles on current and historical maritime issues.
Seacontractors arranges personnel & chartering services for the maritime industry and has become the 40th partner of the Platform Shore Support. The experience in personnel & chartering services for the total maritime, with their main specialization in the towing & workboat industry, can contribute to the platform.
The project Shore Support has proved to be very successful in the last year. The decision has been made now to proceed as the Platform Shore Support. It will be easier to start new associated projects under the umbrella of Shore Support. Besides this the partners can benefit from the strength of the group of organizations that joined the consortium.
Wärtsilä has signed a three-year training contract with its long-time customer Wagenborg Shipping of the Netherlands. The agreement covers the training of more than 830 of the shipping company’s crew members, and will be held at Wärtsilä Land & Sea Academy training centres. The training provided by Wärtsilä consists of about 70 courses a year.

The development of a new university training for technical maritime students has begun on the 15th of December. Technical maritime theory and practice are being melted together to form a new effective training. This will optimize the students ability to perform properly when needed. This new way of training acts as a bridge between school indicators and maritime skills on ships or shore.
An important part of Shore Support is the crew occupation/composition on board. The concept of Shore Support received quite a lot of positive reactions in the maritime cluster. What matters most is whether a Marof feels the same way about Shore Support. This interview of experienced Marof Erik Bouwmeester gives a clear answer to this question.
Exclusive for Consortium Partners of the project Shore Support, a Brainstorm session and Meet & Greet Lunch will be organized preliminary to the seminar ‘Human & Technology’ on the 15th of December.
On Tuesday the 3rd of November Shore Support organized a lunch for the stand holders of Maritime by Holland at Europort 2009 Ahoy Rotterdam. A record amount of visitors were present at Europort 2009. This meant a lot of interaction between the stand holders and enthusiastic visitors. It was not by chance that the lunch was very well appreciated by many. A variety of tasty sandwiches and drinks were available and it was clear to see that this lifted the spirits of the stand holders.
The consortium of the innovation project Shore Support is expanding with ship-owner Gerhard de Jonge and his new ship m.s. Alana Evita. This ship sets sail in November 2009. During the building process De Jonge decided to convert his HFO installation to an MGO installation. This switch makes it possible to join the project Shore Support and makes sailing better for the environment. The Alana Evita is the 25th ship joining the Shore Support project.
The Information Centre Sustainable Shortsea Shipping (Duurzaam Schip) has become a member of the Consortium Shore Support. Duurzaam Schip will contribute as Information and Knowledge Centre by executing research for the project Shore Support. Duurzaam Schip coordinates projects conducted by students of the studies Bachelor of Maritime Operations in the field of innovative sustainable developments on board seagoing vessels.
The Flinterbaltica (2004) and the Flinterbothnia (2003) participate in the project Shore Support. Shipping company Coastwise manages these two high Ice Class ‘multi-purpose’ vessels of 3481 ton Dwt, in cooperation with Flinter for the chartering.
Four students of De Ruyter Maritime Institute in Vlissingen are going to research which systems on board seagoing vessel can be (partly) supported from the shore and what developments exist in these fields. The research will be executed on behalf of Shore Support.
The newly MV Kelt is preparing her first journey with ship-owners Anton & Nicolet van der Velde of Van der Velde Coasting. They joined the project Shore Support in cooperation with Wagenborg.
The MV Panta Rhei (Wagenborg) is one of the 23 vessels that join the project Shore Support. Last April, shipyard Peters in Kampen (The Netherlands) delivered the vessel to the ship-owner
In the 6 Dutch maritime alumni magazines, an article on the seminar of project Shore Support held in April has been published in the latest June edition. The Foundation of Associated Magazines Alumni Maritime Academies is the publisher covering all magazines with a total circulation of almost 3000 copies.
No one knows what the future brings. But it will change, as it always does. This may be frightening or it may be challenging. Either way, we have to look for opportunities to survive. To improve our competitive position. To improve our performance.
At April 8th, during the Navingo Maritime & Offshore Career Event, the Breaking with Traditions seminar will take place. This seminar will be an interactive discussion with maritime students and project partners. Goal: to identify career opportunitees for maritime professionals. Around 300 participants are expected. You can play a role in setting up the program!
A sometimes intensive but pleasant discussion, under leadership of Bionda van Roosendaal (SHEQ Manager at SMIT), attracted 150 participants to the seminar ‘Shore Support’ at the Navingo Maritime and Offshore Career event on the 8th of April 2009.
Project Shore Support is proud to introduce the Maritime Academy and Deltion College as new participants to the consortium. Both institutes will contribute to the knowledge exchange of shore support principles for on board personnel.
