Chart distributor Datema, partner of the Platform SHORE SUPPORT, reports that it has finally managed to secure the necessary permissions to proceed with the roll-out of its ENCtrack distribution system for Electronic Navigational Charts (ENCs), which was the cause of some controversy in the electronic chart world when it was originally launched in 2009.
With a combination of structured maintenance systems and 24-hour onshore support, newly qualified maritime officers can safely take over the tasks of a chief engineer. This is the conclusion of a recent study by TNO in the framework of the SHORE SUPPORT innovation project.

The TNO research for Shore Support on the 25 vessels of Wagenborg, Flinter and Amasus has reached her final phase.TNO is currently analyzing data that has been captured 24 hours a day over a time period of 12 months, resulting in over 200,000 measurements of various kinds, a huge logistic undertaking.

The manufacturing progress for MaK and Cat engines up tot 16,000 kW in Germany has been awarded an impressive environmental award. These companies are both member of the Platform Shore Support. In June, Caterpillar’s Kiel Engine Center in Kiel, Germany, was awarded an Environmental Award from the Economic Association of Schleswig-Holstein.
The shipowner Flinter, one of the Shore Support partners has financially been reorganized, assuring the continuation of the company until 2013. Eight of the original shareholders were bought out by a group of four new shareholders. This was reported by the Dutch newspaper Financieele Dagblad.
The Maritime Academy of ROC Nova College, one of the Shore Support partners, will provide fire fighting training in the Harlingen (Friesland) on a new training center. The new training center is build to educate students and corporate training of the Maritime Academy of the Nova College of Harlingen.
Major revisions to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, 1978 (the STCW Convention), and its associated Code, are set to be adopted at a Diplomatic Conference to be held in Manila, Philippines, from 21 to 25 June 2010.

On Thursday the 25th of February, Shore Support will be represented at a gathering of the dutch maritime fraternity De Nederlandsche Anchorites in Amsterdam. A presentation on the Shore Support philosophy will be given to inform the fraternity and to stimulate positive discussion about the project.
Many vessel currently sail on icy waters in the northern regions of Europe, including Shore Support vessels. The Flinterbrise is one of the 25 vessels involved in the research. The bunkering of gas oil rose last year in Rotterdam by about 20%, from 252,414 tonnes to 302,607 tonnes. At the end of 2009, sales of this light oil increased considerably due to new environmental regulations issued by the European Union. Ocean-going vessels which berth for more than two hours must use fuel with a sulphur content of no more than 0.1%, or in other words gas oil.

The seminar has the central theme Design & Usability and will take place on Tuesday the 1st of June at Damen Shipyards in Bergum (North of the Netherlands).
A Brainstorm session and Meet & Greet lunch were exclusively organized for consortium partners of the innovation project Shore Support at Pon Power in Papendrecht, preliminary to the seminar ‘Human & Technology’. Almost the complete consortium of organizations were represented to discuss on four up to date issues.

The main reason for the Innovation Estafette 2009 is to show how important innovation is for a prosperous and sustainable future of the Netherlands. Wagenborg Shipping has announced that the jury of the KVNR Shipping Award has nominated their shipping company for this yearly award. The reason for their nomination is among others Wagenborg´s initiative for the Project Shore Support and their contribution to the Project Broadband@Sea.
Four workshops will be organised for seafarers and maritime companies on October 27th. These workshops can exclusively be attended by participants of the project Shore Support and is initiated by members of the consortium.
SWZ Maritime has published two articles on Shore Support in the June 09 edition. SWZ Maritime is the Dutch magazine for technical professionals in the maritime industry. Every month, the magazine brings its readers the latest developments and news from all areas of the maritime industry. This edition was dedicated to Innovation within the maritime industry.
After five months of preparation, TNO has delivered measuring instruments for the participating ships. It concerns 94 PDA’s using specially developed software.
TNO has written a scientific paper describing the results of their development of the measurement instruments to assess safety for the participating ships.
